This afternoon's beer: Surly Coffee Bender
Opens with a blast of coffee, neatly counterpoised against dark-bready/caramel sweetness. Hints of dark chocolate and toast and molasses. Maybe traces of toffee and nuts. Earthy-grassy bitterness a late arrival, lingering into a smoothly drying finish.
Medium-bodied, with lots of carbonation. Cleansing and drying and surprisingly refreshing. Just a bit of lingering stickiness, mostly clean.
A very tasty coffee beer, perfect for a late morning (or early afternoon) as a second cup of coffee. Intense as hell and astonishingly intense—especially for 5.1% ABV; marvelously well-integrated, a lot like balanced, drinkable as hell. Surly have managed to make a truly superb coffee beer. They continue to live up to their reputation.
