Tröegs Mad Elf

Tonight's beer: Tröegs Mad Elf

Tröegs Mad Elf

Dry, almost tart cherries to start; backed by bread smeared with honey and edged with caramel and toast. Maybe a trace of chocolate. Hints of spice (mainly cloves) and possibilities of dried fruits, dim impressions of earth and grass, tobacco and peat. Eventually dries out a little.

Surprisingly light-bodied, a good amount of fine carbonation. Some bready-syrupy stickiness into the finish, eventually gently drying and impressively refreshing. Basically no trace of the 11% ABV payload.

A scarily drinkable beer. Intense as hell, staggeringly complex; probably overly dominated by the cherries (much as I like that) but decently integrated—apparently pretty close to what the brewers intended. Also, beautiful in the glass (a bonus). Pretty idiosyncratic as Xmas beers go, but one i love. A reminder, as though I need one, that it's about time for out annual trip to Tröegs.
