Tonight's second beer, after the error that was Flying Dog Naughty: Brouwerij Van Steenberge Gulden Draak 3rd Brewmasters Edition

Brouwerij Van Steenberge Gulden Draak 3rd Brewmasters Edition

Opens with bready sweetness, edged with caramel and toast and vanilla; dried fruits linger in the interstices: raisins, dates and figs, maybe cherries and plums, apples and pears. Peaty-earthy bitterness emerges toward the finish, with possibilities of baking spices: cloves, allspice, maybe cinnamon and nutmeg. Wraps up gradually smoothly dry.

Surprisingly light-bodied, with lots (and lots) of carbonation. A little smooth softness, some brief, thin stickiness; dries out easily and pretty quickly, eventually pretty refreshing and almost refreshing. Roughly no hint of the 10.5% ABV.

A delicious beer, but and brawny in a uniquely Belgian way: supple and graceful and drinkable as hell. Maybe not so intense as one might expect from such a big beer, but crazily, giddily complex; gloriously well-balanced and integrated. Smooth and subtle. Definitely worth the finding.
