Tonight's beer: DC Brau Alpha Domina Mellis
Opens with a smooth steep crescendo of bitterness, building inexorably to a towering teetering polychromic monolith: flowers and citrus, musky tropical fruits, melons, threads of pine and grass. Pale bready sweetness struggles briefly to the surface, buoyed by honey and caramel. Caroms and slams to bitter again on its way to flinty-dry.
A little thicker than medium-bodied, carbonation a little on the sparse side but adequate; bready-soft chewiness giving way to resinous stickiness. Lingering and scrubbing and scouring, eventually drying and almost refreshing, with absolutely no hint of the 8.5% ABV.
Oh. My. Gawd. Jut so much flavor, here, even for a Double IPA. Staggeringly intense and stupefyingly complex, beautifully well-integrated and terrifyingly drinkable; not even in the universe next door to balanced, but poised and confident and supple. DC Brau basically aced this.
