Tonight's beer: Stillwater Artisanal Arcana

Stillwater Artisanal Arcana

Opens deeply-roasty and ashy: coffee and unsweetened chocolate; almost-acrid smoke and ash. Burnt fruit emerges quickly, with layers of licorice and caramel. Grassy-earthy-peaty bitterness slides forward through the middle, lasts through a short and dry finish. Thin streaks of lingering pepper and spice.

Very light-bodied, with lots of fine carbonation. Just a small bit of stickiness, then clean and cleansing, drying and startlingly refreshing.

A tasty Belgian-style stout, at least as much of a saison as a stout. Amazingly complex, intense as hell; holds together surprisingly well. Goes in several different directions, but "balanced" seems like a reasonable descriptor. Nicely drinkable. Another excellent beer from Stillwater Artisanal. a Belgian style beer actually brewed in Belgium.
