Alewerks Bitter Valentine

Tonight's beer: Alewerks Bitter Valentine

Alewerks Bitter Valentine

Opens explosively bitter: loads of citrus (mainly grapefruit, some orange and lime), some pine and flowers, threads of grass and musk. Pale bread hides in the distance, thoroughly cowed and overshadowed by all the bitterness. Juicy sweetness slopes and slides to bitter again and remarkably dry.

Medium-bodied, pulpy and juicy, nicely carbonated. Lots of resinous stickiness, eventually drying; scouring, scrubbing, impressively refreshing. No real hint of the 8.3% ABV.

Quit a delicious Double IPA, one I was fortunate enough to be at the brewery to acquire (because of other vacation plans). Astonishingly intense and staggeringly complex, not in the same universe as balanced, but surprisingly well-integrated and scarily drinkable. Very, very nice; entirely deserving of its reputation.
