Tonight's beer: Augustinerbräu München Maximator
Starts out thickly, deeply sweet: caramel and toast,, molasses, toffee and bread and maybe nuts; possibilities of dried fruits. Earthy-grassy bitterness, with flickers of flowers and maybe spice, emerges toward the finish as the beer slips some toward dry.
Bready and chewy, a bit thicker than medium-bodied. Pretty well-carbonated. Some soft stickiness seques to gently drying, eventually refreshing. Maybe a vague trace of lingering boozy warmth.
A delicious doppelbock, layered thickly with bready (and other) sweetness, poised but not exactly balanced. Less linear than many lagers—nicely complex and massively intense. Wonderfully well-integrated. Goes well with food, goes well in food (at least, in pork chili). Superbly drinkable.
