Tonight's beer: Blue Mountain Barrel House Blitzen
Dark-bready sweetness to open, with layers of caramel, dried fruits (figs, dates, cherries, plums, grapes), baking spice (cloves, allspice, maybe ginger and cinnamon). Molasses lurks around the edges, hints of smoke, tobacco, peat, earth, grass. Wraps up gradually but thoroughly dry.
On the light side of medium-bodied, with lots of fine dense carbonation. A little soft chewiness and stickiness around the edges, eventually softly drying and refreshing.
A superbly delicious Belgian-style Xmas beer, from a brewery I've really come to expect great things from. Bracingly intense and jaw-droppingly complex, nicely balanced and impressively well-integrated. Staggeringly drinkable.Lots going here, for a beer that doesn't seem to be spiced (from what I can tell) and isn't as numbingly alcoholic as some others in the style (at only 7% ABV. Yum.
