Tonight's beer: Deschutes Mirror Mirror (2014)

Deschutes Mirror Mirror (2014)

Bready sweetness at first, with layers of toast, caramel, toffee, dark fruits—figs and dates and plums and raisins. Earthy-grassy-floral bitterness arises around the middle, lingers into a long and slowly-drying finish. Vague hints of spice and vanilla in the distance; possibilities of cardboard (nothing horrible, really).

Medium-bodied, smooth, with kinda light carbonation. Some soft chewiness, traces and threads of stickiness. Vinous-flinty prickle around the end, as the beer turns toward the drying (and eventually refreshing). Alcohol presence astonishingly subdued for 11.2% ABV.

A beautiful barleywine, with lots going on—all gloriously well-integrated and something a lot like balanced. Impressively intense and stupefyingly complex. Startlingly drinkable. Graceful and supple, subtle enough to reward close and deep attention.
