Hardywood Bourbon Barrel GBS

Tonight's beer: Hardywood Bourbon Barrel GBS

Hardywood Bourbon Barrel GBS

Lots of dark bittersweet chocolate, threaded with vanilla, molasses, ginger, cinnamon. Coffee lurks in the background. Dark bread, edged with caramel and toast. Earthy-peaty bitterness slips in toward the finish, as the beer struggles to dry out (and does, a little).

Thick and dense and smooth, some fine carbonation woven through. Coating and syrupy-sticky; eventually gently drying. Remarkably little alcohol presence given the 10.6% ABV.

Oh, wow. This is a truly magnificent stout. There is a lot going on in this beer, and the bourbon  barrel aging could turn it into a hot mess, but it doesn't. Intense as heck, staggeringly complex; astonishingly well-integrated (even if "balanced" probably doesn't apply here). Distressingly drinkable.
