Heavy Seas Double Cannon

Tonight's beer: Heavy Seas Double Cannon

Heavy Seas Double Cannon

Starts with a blast of floral and citrussy (grapefruit and orange) bitterness, layers and threads of pine, grass, musk. Pale-bready sweetness arises right behind and fills in rapidly; maybe some caramel around the edges. Dries out sharply and pretty thoroughly toward the end, as bitterness reasserts itself.

Medium-bodied, maybe a little on the thick and chewy side; hints of resinous-syrupy stickiness hang around for a little while. Eventually drying and refreshing, scrubbing and a little scouring. Almost pulpy-juicy abrasiveness on the back end. Just a hint of boozy glow.

A truly superb Double IPA, maybe a little sweeter than the norm, but that just means it's closer to balanced than one would likely expect. Blisteringly intense and stunningly complex. Astonishingly drinkable, graceful and supple and subtle. Heavy Seas are close enough to me that I'm probably neck-deep in the tank for them, but I enjoyed the hell out of this.
