Tonight's beer: Smuttynose Smistletoe 2015

Smuttynose Smistletoe 2015

Bready sweetness to open, with layers of fruit: cherries, plums, grapes/currants, apples, pears. Threads of caramel and maybe vanilla woven in. Earthy-grassy bitterness flickers past as the beer evolves toward tartly dry.

Bracingly light-bodied, with lots of carbonation and some substantial pucker—almost juicy. Scrubbing, cleansing, immensely refreshing. Eventually, gently drying, with the 8.5% ABV very well-hidden.

Once one gets past the startling color, this is as festive a beer as Smuttynose say it is. Lots of tart fruit going on and around, almost enough to drown out the Bière de Garde base beer; complex as hell but nicely integrated and poised. Astonishingly drinkable; graceful and supple and subtle. Wonderfully celebratory.
