Tonight's beer: Tröegs Scratch 219

Tröegs Scratch 219

Earthy-peaty-grassy bitterness to open, with threads of flowers and maybe spice and pepper. Bready sweetness emerges through the middle, edges with caramel and toast. Dried/candied fruits lurk in the interstices, possibilities of nuts and toffee. Gradually evolves toward dry.

Medium-bodied, with a good amount of carbonation. Some bready chewiness, lingering threads of stickiness. Softly drying and scrubbing, eventually refreshing.

A remarkably on-style ESB, maybe a little more pepper and spice than many. Intense and impressively complex, balanced and integrated. Staggeringly drinkable. Tröegs nailed this, no big surprise. Not the most common beer for American brewers to take a shot at, which is a shame.
