Tonight's beer: Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (2015)

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout (2015)

Lots of unsweetened dark chocolate to open with maybe a thin veil of coffee. Deeply-toasted bread, edged with caramel, emerges through the middle, backed by earth and peat and grass. Darkly bitter and dry into a long, slow finish.

Thick and viscous and bready-chewy, with slightly sparse but adequate carbonation. Some syrupy stickiness lingers, eventually gently drying. Maybe just a bit of a boozy prickle.

This was the first imperial stout (of any sort) I ever had, lo these many years ago. It's still and always an excellent beer. Smooth and subtle, intense as hell and amazingly complex; remarkably like balance (considering the style) and drinkable as hell, in a Big Sipping Beer way, with almost no warning of the 10% ABV. Still one of my favorites, though I'll admit I'm almost certainly biased.
