Tonight's beer: DC Brau On the Wings of Armageddon
Searingly bitter to open: lemons and other citrus (limes, grapefruit, maybe oranges); strong presences of pine, flowers, grass, musk. Bread emerges momentarily around the middle, possibilities of caramel around the edges; then the beer dries out steeply and thoroughly as the bitterness reasserts itself and lingers a while.
Might be a bit thicker than medium-boded, some resinous-syrupy stickiness and good carbonation. Rapidly drying, scrubbing and almost scouring. Eventually something startlingly close to refreshing, with very little indication of the 9.2% ABV.
Yum! A biggish Double IPA turns out to be something of a wild ride, to the surprise of roughly no one, I expect; it's exactly as the style should be. Crazily intense, giddily complex; not even in the same universe as balanced, but poised and graceful and alarmingly drinkable. This beer is kinda hard to get, even around here, without going to the brewery, but it's worth the effort.
