Tonight's beer: Ommegang Soothsayer
Caramel and dark bread, edged with toast; hints of chocolate emerging right behind. Dried dark fruits through the middle—cherries, plums, grapes, figs, dates—sprinkled lightly with cloves an other baking spices. Earthy-grassy bitterness arises in the distance, with threads of peat and tobacco. Gradually, thoroughly dry.
Surprisingly light-bodied, copiously and densely carbonated. A trace of gentle stickiness but mostly clean, eventually cleansing and drying. Roughly zero alcohol presence.
A superb Belgian strong dark ale, from an American brewery with a superb feel for Belgian styles. Laden with flavor—intense as hell and staggeringly complex—but graceful and balanced and supple; beautifully well-integrated and magnificently drinkable.
