Southern Tier 2XSMASH

Tonight's beer: Southern Tier 2XSMASH

Southern Tier 2XSMASH

Imposingly bitter to start: musky and floral, layered atop melon and tropical fruits; citrus (grapefruit and lime) and grass an pine woven in. Bready sweetness flashes past, trailing impressions of caramel; then, the bitterness reasserts itself and the beer transitions quickly to thoroughly dry.

Pretty much medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. A little bit of soft chewiness, lingering threads of resinous stickiness. Eventually gently cleansing and drying, massively refreshing.

Wow. Southern Tier have been brewing this annually for a few years, now—the first couple years it was called 2XONE, but the difference is basically nonexistent and the beer remains awesome. An amazingly deep and complex beer for one hop (even if it's Mosaic) and one malt, nicely intense. Staggeringly drinkable.
