This afternoon's beer: Boulevard Early Riser
Starts with a brief shot of dark coffee; bread and toast and caramel and chocolate congregate closely behind. earth and peat and smoke linger around the perimeter, receding to the distance. Transitions quickly and easily to surprisingly dry.
Maybe a touch on the thick side of medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. Some bready chewiness and stickiness, eventually drying and pretty refreshing.
Probably on the light/thin side for a porter, but laden with coffee character; definitely a fine beer for early in the day (if that's when you tend to drink your coffee beers, as I do). Quite intense and complex for 5.2% ABV, nicely balanced. Drinkable as heck, and all sorts of other good things—poised, supple, graceful, integrated. I'm definitely way (way, way) in the tank for Boulevard at this point, but I like this a lot.
