Tonight's beer: Brasserie de Silly Bourbon Barrel Aged Scotch Silly
Opens with dark dried fruits (plums, cherries, figs, dates, red grapes) smothered in caramel; hints of toast around the edges. Baking spices (cloves, allspice, ginger, nutmeg) blend in with earthy-peaty-grassy bitterness to make for an adequate counterpoint. Vanilla arises toward the end, with grace notes of tobacco; then, the beer edges toward dry.
Medium-bodied, maybe a touch lighter; soft and a little chewy. Nicely carbonated—some thin stickiness lifts easily and quickly. Gently drying and a lot like refreshing, with zero indication of the 11% ABV.
A delicious beer, terrifyingly drinkable. Astonishingly intense, deliriously complex; poised and graceful and balanced and surprisingly well-integrated. Belgian Scotch Ales are always fun, and this may be the best I've had in the style. An already excellent beer, turned up a notch or two.
