Heavy Seas / Maine Beer Company Red IPA

Tonight's beer: Heavy Seas / Maine Beer Company Red IPA

Heavy Seas / Maine Beer Company Red IPA

Starts out sparklingly bitter: flowers and grass, pine and loads of citrus—orange and lime and grapefruit and lemon; maybe threads of musk. Bready-juicy sweetness fills in through the middle, laced and layered with toast and caramel. Wraps up quickly and thoroughly dry.

Medium-bodied, with good lively carbonation. Resinous-syrupy stickiness clears slowly, turns cleansing and drying and massively refreshing.

Wow. I'm a big fan of Heavy Seas, and I've liked the few beers I've had from Main; this beer exceeded the high expectations I had for it. Intense and crazily complex, wonderfully well-balanced and superbly integrated. Drinkable for days. Hoppy amber/red ales (red IPAs they're being called these days) are a weakness, but this beer is absolutely nailed.
