Tonight's beer: Heavy Seas (Uncharted Waters) Plank IV
Opens with dark dried/candied fruits: plums and cherries, figs and dates, maybe grapes. Dark bread laced with molasses and vanilla and toast fills the interstices, and baking spices emerge quickly—cloves and allspice, hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger.Earthy bitterness builds slowly starting around the middle; peat and tobacco in the distance. Slides easily to dry around the finish.
Medium-bodied, maybe a tad on the lighter side; plenty of carbonation. A hint of soft stickiness, traces of a gentle boozy glow (quite subdued for 10.5% ABV). Eventually surprisingly drying and a lot like refreshing.
Yum! This is a staggeringly complex beer, some of which is likely from the woods it was aged on. Plenty intense, wonderfully well-integrated, securely balanced. Some alcohol presence, but astonishingly drinkable. Graceful and supple and poised. Delicious from start to finish.
