Tonight's beer: Ninkasi Helles Belles
Pale-bready sweetness poised precisely against grassy-floral bitterness. Hints around the edges of caramel, earth, and sulfur. Wraps up quickly and thoroughly dry.
Remarkably light-bodied with lots of carbonation. Clean, cleansing (almost scrubbing), powerfully refreshing. Not much lingers—vanishingly dry.
A suitably straightforward and direct Helles lager, maybe not a style one would associate with an Oregon brewery, but nicely done. Precisely balanced and wonderfully well-integrated, tasty enough if direct and simple. Impressively drinkable. Maybe something in the realm of a lawnmower beer, but an excellently made one.
