Tonight's beer: Sierra Nevada Bigfoot (2016)
Grassy-piny bitterness up front, butting up against toasty-caramel sweetness. Flowers and citrus around the edges. Earth, butter, vanilla, dark dried fruits in the distance. Sidles toward dry through a long and gradual finish.
A little thick and bready-chewy, nicely carbonated. Some syrupy-resinous stickiness, eventually pretty clean, almost cleansing and surprisingly refreshing. Maybe a soft trace of boozy prickle.
One of the definitive American barleywines, going back a long way (more than thirty years, I think). Amazingly intense and stunningly complex; surprisingly close to balanced, nicely poised and integrated. Not as close to being a double IPA as I remember, but that could be a fault in my memory (or my palate), or the fact this has already been the bottle for almost six months. Either way, a delicious beer.
