Tonight's beer: Southern Tier Choklat Oranj
| Southern Tier Choklat Tier |
Opens with a solid wall of dark-chocolate-wrapped oranges, with hints of other citrussy things buried deep. Coffee and caramel break through gradually, then cracks appear and earthy bitterness emerges briefly; for a moment the beer beer seems as though it'll dry out, but it never really does (more than a little). Lingering impressions of vanilla and mint.
Pretty thick and dense, with slow but ample carbonation. Massive syrupy stickiness coats in thick layers, eventually breaks down. Sluggishly drying with basically no boozy heat or prickle.
Wow. Basically what it says on the label: chocolate and orange. Plenty of stuff in the background and the interstices to make for plenty of complexity (if not necessarily balance); crazily intense and giddily drinkable, poised and supple and nicely integrated. Seems as though it should have enough substance to age for a while, if that's your bag. A wonderful beer as it is.
