Boulevard (Smokestack Series) Chocolate Ale with Raspberry

Tonight's beer: Boulevard (Smokestack Series) Chocolate Ale with Raspberry

Boulevard (Smokestack Series) Chocolate Ale with Raspberry

Opens with bright and juicy raspberries; chocolate emerges quickly, fades rapidly. Bread and caramel and maybe toast lurk on the perimeter. Hints of earth and grass in the distance, maybe a touch of peat. Transitions less to dry than to fruity-tart, almost puckering.

A little lighter than medium-bodied, lots of carbonation. Juicy and almost pulpy. Some thin syrupy stickiness lingers, dries out slowly. Eventually more puckering than drying, pretty clean and refreshing.

A pretty straightforward beer—pretty much what it says on the label, maybe leaning a bit more toward raspberry than chocolate (which is kinda the opposite of what it says on the label: Chocolate Ale with Raspberry). Intense and pretty well-balanced among the flavors that are there. Poised and graceful.  Drinkable enough as a dessert sipping beer. Definitely worth drinking, but probably not in the top tiers of Boulevard's beers, especially the Smokestack Series.
