Tonight's beer: Grand Teton Black Cauldron
Starts off with a wall of mostly-roasty bitterness; dark chocolate and coffee; hints of toast, molasses, caramel, dark bread merge easily and gradually. A touch o smoke around the edges. Earthy-peaty-grassy bitterness arises toward the end, as the beer shuffles in a dryward direction. Dim lingering possibilities of vanilla and spice.
A bit thicker than medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. Bready chewiness turns into syrupy stickiness, lasts a while. Gradually kinda drying. Not much alcohol presence, given the 9.5% ABV.
This is a delicious Big American Stout, with lots of intense and complex flavor happening—9.5% ABV will drive a lot of flavor, no doubt. Nicely integrated, and something a lot like balanced, given the style. Impressively drinkable; supple and poised and all those good things. One of the Mountain West breweries I wish I could find more often; I have a soft spot.
