Tonight's beer: Heavy Seas Double Cannon
Starts with a searing blast of bitterness: pine and citrus (grapefruit, lime, lemon) up front; grass, flowers, musk woven in. Bready sweetness lurks in the background pretty much throughout, caramel and possibilities of toast on the periphery. Wraps up steeply dry.
A little thicker than medium-bodied, lots of prickling fine carbonation. Some resinous-syrupy stickiness, touches of chewiness; eventually drying and cleansing and surprisingly refreshing. Not much hint or warning of the 9.5% ABV.
A delicious and very drinkable Double IPA. Intense as heck, nicely complex—the bar is high here, given the style, and the beer rises to it. Nothing like balanced, but poised and well-integrated, graceful and supple. I'm always happy to grab this, whenever I see it. Heavy Seas have earned a lot of my trust.
