Tonight's beer: Heavy Seas/Tröegs Hoppelbock
From the start, poised between grassy-floral bitterness and caramel-toasty-nutty-bready sweetness. Hints of pine and citrus, toffee and dried darker fruits flicker past. Dries out smoothly and pretty thoroughly.
A little heavier than medium-bodied, kinda thick and chewy. Some soft bready stickiness clears pretty quickly as the beer glides toward cleansing and drying and impressively refreshing. No real hint of the 8% ABV.
When I heard that two of my favorite local-ish breweries had collaborated on something, I was intrigued; when I heard it was a hoppy doppelbock, I started actively looking for it. Turns out, it's an excellent beer—no surprise, there. Suitably intense and complex (if maybe a bit linear, appropriately for the style); balanced and drinkable as hell. Holds together superbly well, poised and graceful. A delicious beer.
