Grassy bitterness opens, with flecks and threads of pine and citrus (mainly grapefruit). Thick caramel and toast on top of bread filling in behind. Baking spice (nutmeg and cloves) and dried candied fruits (figs, dates, maybe plums and cherries) around the edges. Dies out easily and gradually.

Thick and chewy, lots of lingering syrupy-resinous stickiness. A vague boozy glow, pretty subdued for 9.6% ABV. Slowly but eventually thoroughly drying.

An extraordinarily tasty barleywine, definitely American, even with the hops receding. Big and brawny and clearly undamaged (but not unchanged) by a year and a half (or thereabouts) in the bottle. Intense as hell, suitably complex; something a lot like balanced, nicely put-together, poised and graceful. Impressively drinkable.
