Tonight's beer: Smartmouth Alter Ego
Opens with a splash of grassy-floral bitterness, followed closely by a crescendo of pale fruits—pears and apples and white grapes (maybe a hint of citrus). Pale bread lurks, edged with caramel. Flecks of spice (mostly cloves) and pepper. Dries out rapidly and easily and completely.
Light-bodied, with lots of fine carbonation. Cleansing, scrubbing, drying, refreshing. Pretty smooth, a trace of lingering stickiness.
A very tasty—and exceptionally convincing—saison, another excellent pickup from Richmond. Tastes like something from Brewer's Art (a high compliment). Intense and complex, balanced and poised and graceful. Astonishingly drinkable.
