Tonight's beer: Strangeways Woodbooger
Chocolate and toffee and nuts to open, closely backed by caramel. Dried/candied dark fruits fill in—plums, dates, cherries, figs—with threads of baking spice (allspice and cloves and nutmeg) alongside tobacco and peat and maybe smoke. Darkish bready sweetness an undertone basically from start to finish. Dries pretty quickly and almost completely.
Pretty light-bodied, lots of carbonation; quickly cleansing and powerfully refreshing. Maybe a threads of lingering stickiness. Impressively drying.
Pretty tasty, and pretty convincing as a Belgian Dark Ale. Not punitively strong, at 6% ABV, but intense and complex; wonderfully well-balanced and integrated. Nicely drinkable, with plenty of hooks for food pairings—definitely an asset for a table-strength beer. It's pretty clear there are some breweries in and around Richmond that are spot-on, just about the same as anywhere decent-sized. It's a good time to be a beer nerd.
