Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier

Tonight's beer: Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier

Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier

Opens—kinda surprisingly—with a splash of grassy bitterness, spice—mainly cloves, of course—sliding forward. Pale fruits emerge right behind: bananas, hints of lemon and orange; bubblegum, maybe smoke and pepper around the edges. Pale bread in the background, a foundation for everything else. Rapidly and thoroughly dry.

Light-bodied, with lots of carbonation; but smooth as silk. Quickly clean, cleansing, drying; massively refreshing (with just a hint of pucker around the finish).

Pretty much the definitive hefeweizen, not shocking coming from a brewery that houses Bavaria's brewing school. Crazily intense and complex for 5.4% ABV, dominated by yeasty esters but entirely and beautifully integrated. Graceful and poised and drinkable as hell. Always nice to touch base with a classic.
