Tonight's beer: Sierra Nevada Hoptimum
Opens with a bright splash of grassy-floral bitterness, pine and musk and hints of citrus around the edges. Bready sweetness through the middle, grace notes of caramel and fruit. Impressions of pale spirits (vodka and gin and maybe light rum). Dries out pretty quickly and completely.
Maybe a bit thicker than medium-bodied, softly chewy and decently carbonated. Thick lingering smears of resinous-syrupy stickiness, gradually drying. Eventually clears up some, scrubbing and almost scouring.
A big and brawny double IPA, kinda subdued compared to my memories of past years (which could be me, or the batch, or the bottles being a little close to old). An awful lot like balanced, given the style; intense but less complex than I was expecting. Nicely drinkable in a big sipping beer kinda way. Holds together well, but clearly a beer to drink as fresh as possible.
