Tonight's beer: Southern Tier Salted Caramel
Big, thick, smeary slabs of caramel, layers of molasses and maple, hints of vanilla. Dark chocolate and coffee emerge right behind, with a glimpse of toast and dark bread. Earthy-peaty bitterness struggles to make itself known, after a brief moment recedes back to the murk whence it came. Flicker of ash and burnt fruits around the edges. Dries out gradually, at least a little; finishes just a touch less sweet than it opens.
Thick and dense and syrupy-sticky; a decent amount of fine and pretty sluggish carbonation. Not exactly drying, but edges toward refreshing. Considering the 10% ABV, very little heat. Distinctly smooth.
A big, sweet stout—definitely a dessert beer, perfect for sipping. Not exactly a malt-bomb, but toweringly sweet. Intense as heck and impressively complex; distinctly unbalanced, but clearly intentionally so. Nicely drinkable, with almost no alcohol presence. As dominated by the caramel as Choklat is by the chocolate or Crème Brûlée is by the vanilla: It's how Southern Tier rolls with their Blackwater Series stouts. Good thing I like the beers that way, at least as a change of pace.
