Tonight's beer: DC Brau On the Wings of Armageddon
A big spattery blast of bitterness to open: lemon backed by grapefruit and orange; pine and grass; flowers and musk and maybe tropical fruits. Pale bread appears around the middle, with a thin wispy layer of caramel. Dries out quickly—abruptly—and thoroughly as bitterness reasserts itself through the finish.
Medium-bodied and decently carbonated, some bready chewiness and big slabs of resinous-syrupy stickiness. Slams and caroms to drying and scrubbing; cleansing and scouring. Manages to edge in the direction of refreshing—surprisingly so for 9.2% ABV. Almost no hint of that alcohol content: just a whisper of heat.
A supremely tasty Double IPA, a giddily wild ride but intentional and nicely-integrated. Obviously not in the same universe as balanced. Madly intense and shockingly complex, distressingly drinkable. One of my favorites in the style, from a brewery I think of as local.
