Tonight's beer: Founders Redankulous
Opens musky and floral and fruity: tropical fruits like melons and pineapples and mangoes and papayas; citrus—mainly orange and lime—in the background, alongside grass and pine. Bread, smeared with caramel and edged with toast in the distance some. Bitter, then quickly a little sweet, then gradually but thoroughly dry.
Just a bit thicker than medium-bodied, with lots of carbonation. Thick slabs of resinous-syrupy stickiness, backed by soft-bready chewiness. Eventually wraps up pretty clean, scrubbing and drying and refreshing.
A gloriously delicious Big American Red Ale—Red IPA, if you prefer; aptly named. Magnificently complex and austerely intense, very much in the neighborhood of balanced and wonderfully well-integrated. Stupidly drinkable. A good example of why I often think red/amber beers work better to show off hop flavors than pale ones.
