Coastal Empire/Burnt Hickory March to the Sea

Bready-caramel sweetness the first impression, with hints of toast and toffee and vanilla woven in; grassy-earthy bitterness closely follows, with maybe a touch of peat and ash and smoke. Dried fruits—mostly dates and figs, maybe dark stone fruits like cherries, or something like apples—linger on the periphery. Slides easily and slowly to surprisingly dry by the finish.

Kinda bready-soft, a little thicker than medium-bodied, with pretty decent carbonation. A trace of syrupy stickiness. A lot lose to clean than I would have expected, gently drying and almost refreshing; basically no warning of the 11% ABV.

A genuinely delicious barleywine, perfect for helping me get my mood right before going to visit my in-laws; at least one of these breweries is local to them, to boot. Crazily intense and giddily complex—even after at least a year in the bottle. Wonderfully well-integrated, surprisingly balanced, drinkable as hell. A beer with the potential to cause mayhem if one doesn't see the 11% ABV on the label (and maybe even if one does). I've had at least one other something from Burnt Hickory, and it was good; I should try to find something else by Coastal Empire while I'm in the area.
