Tonight's beer: Great Divide Claymore
Caramel and toast layered with dark dried fruits: figs and dates, hints of plums. Nuts and toffee lurk around the middle, alongside earthy-peaty-grassy bitterness. Sweetness reemerges briefly before the beer slides easily to gently dry. Distant hints of spice and vanilla.
A bit thicker than medium-bodied, nicely carbonated but smooth. Some soft-bready chewiness, a little stickiness. Eventually easily drying, softly cleansing, almost refreshing.
A tasty as hell Wee Heavy, kinda the opposite of all the IPAs I've been drinking lately, and a fine way to start to welcome autumn—in spite of the distinctly summerish weather—before the Onslaught of All Things Pumpkin Spice.
(Though I like pumpkin spice just fine ...)
Intense as heck and impressively complex, not so much of a malt-bomb as some in the style but not really close to balanced. Nicely integrated, graceful and supple and massively drinkable. An excellent beer from one of the first craft breweries I got my hands on, lo these many moons ago.
