Tonight's beer: Jailbreak Van Dammit!

Jailbreak Van Dammit!

Starts out with lots of darkish sweetness: dark bread, caramel, threads of molasses; dried/candied dark fruits—plums, figs, cherries, dates, grapes. Baking spices—mostly cloves with hints of nutmeg and cinnamon and allspice—emerge alongside earthy-peaty-grassy bitterness. Dries out smoothly and steeply into the moderately quick finish, vanilla and rum and other dark spirits lingering.

Medium-bodied, maybe a bit lighter; highly carbonated. Some soft bready chewiness, lingering syrupy stickiness. Eventually gently drying and impressively refreshing. Just a trace of boozy prickle—very subdued for 9% ABV.

A delicious example of the style, quite convincing for coming from what is really a pretty small (very local to me) brewpub-ish American brewery. I gather this beer won a major award of some sort not long ago, and I can see why. Awesomely complex and intense, nicely balanced and magnificently well-integrated. Terrifyingly drinkable, with very little alcohol presence.
