Tonight's beer:
Lots of sweetness up front: molasses, caramel, toffee; hints of nuts and toast. Earthy and grassy and maybe floral bitterness around the edges, emerging especially around the middle. Vague possibilities of baking spice, vanilla, and dried fruits. Slides easily and gradually to surprisingly dry.
On the thick side of medium-bodied, nicely (and densely) carbonated. Smooth, almost creamy, with some chewiness evolving to syrupy stickiness. Through the finish, struggles in the direction of drying; makes it as far as almost refreshing. Slight boozy tingle on the back end.
I stumbled upon this in a store a few days ago, and I'm glad I did. A very excellent doppelbock, intense as hell and quite complex (belying the idea that lagers are always squarely linear); superbly balanced and well-integrated. Massively drinkable. It's not quite winter here, yet, but it'll do.
