Tonight's beer:
Opens with a burst of bitterness, grassy and floral with piny-citrussy undertones (where citrussy means grapefruit-laden with flecks of lime and orange). Bready sweetness arises around the middle, edged with caramel and toast; lingers a while, evolving toward molasses and maple. Dries out smoothly but thoroughly as bitterness forcefully re-emerges.
Medium-bodied with lots of fine, prickling carbonation; maybe a bit lighter. Thick slabby waves of resinous-syrupy stickiness. Eventually pretty clean, massively drying, surprisingly refreshing. No real alcohol presence.
A delicious beer, one I grab every year about this time. This seems maybe a little hoppier than I remember, more citrussy maybe. Intense as hell, marvelously complex; surprisingly well-balanced and superbly well-integrated. Gloriously drinkable, with distressingly little boozy heat or prickle, given the 9.7% ABV—practically none.
