Tonight's beer:
Opens darkly toasty-bitter, with caramel and maybe molasses around the edges; peat and earth and grass emerge around the middle. Dark dried fruits flash past alongside threads of baking spice—mainly cloves and cinnamon—into a quickly dry finish.
Definitely on the thick and heavy side, decently carbonated. Some chewiness, then a sizable smear of stickiness. Gradually cleansing and drying, clean and eventually refreshing. Gently warming, filling and satisfying.
A delicious winter warmer, clearly inspired in principle by Anchor's Our Special Ale (a different Xmas beer every year) but not a slavish copy by any means. Nicely intense and complex, balanced and integrated and niftily drinkable. A wonderful beer to drink as December digs in its icy claws, even if only briefly (if the forecast is to be believed).
