Olde Hickory Black Raven

Tonight's beer:

Olde Hickory Black Raven

Opens quite bitter—grassy and floral mostly, with threads of pine and maybe citrus woven in. Toast and caramel dance with chocolate and coffee through the middle, with hints of molasses and maple and toffee around the edges. Maybe smoke and peat. Wraps up briskly and thoroughly dry.

Medium-bodied, with lots of scrubbing and cleansing carbonation. A little chewiness, thin sheets of resinous and otherwise syrupy stickiness. Dries out quickly and completely.

A superb Black IPA, tasty and well-constructed. Intense and complex, gloriously well-integrated and massively drinkable; poised between bitter and bitter with grace notes of sweet. Graceful and smooth, subtle enough to insist on and reward close attention. Delicious from start to finish.
