Ommegang Shadow Brewer

Tonight's beer:

Ommegang Shadow Brewer

Deeply roasty at the start: coffee/espresso and dark unsweetened chocolate. Burnt toast and ash and a touch of smoke woven in. Touches of molasses and peat and vanilla and burnt dark fruits. Earth and peat and a touch of grass in the distance. Starts out roasty-bitter, glides to softly sweet into an almost-dry finish.

Only a little thicker than medium-bodied, with lots of carbonation. Chewy-bready-soft, lingering syrupy stickiness. Gradually drying and cleansing, eventually something like refreshing. Basically no warning of the 9.7% ABV.

A truly superb Big American Stout, the only hint of Ommegang's typical Belgian character the slightly light body for the style. Stupidly complex and intense for days, smooth and supple and graceful. Gloriously drinkable, marvelously well-integrated. It's nice to see them do such a straightforward big style and nail it.
