Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Tonight's beer:

Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Caramel-bready sweetness wrapped in piny-grassy-floral bitterness. Citrus lurks in the background, alongside dried and candied fruits—lemons and grapefruit and oranges, probably some others. Nits and/or toffee around the edges, maybe a touch of spice. That bittersweet character slides easily to impressively dry by the end.

Just about medium-bodied, with lots of carbonation. Some thin resinous stickiness lingers for a while, then turns surprisingly clean. Quickly cleansing and drying and surprisingly refreshing. Absolutely no warning of the 9.7% ABV.

A superbly tasty Big American Beer, part brown and part barleywine and part Belgian and part IPA. Intense as hell and staggeringly complex, smooth and balanced and gloriously well-integrated. Shockingly drinkable. One of my favorite winter seasonal beers, and worth the getting every year.
