Tonight's beer:
Bread and caramel and toast backed by chocolate and earth and grass; richly bittersweet. Fruit arises around the middle, dried apples and pears, maybe white grapes (raisins). Hints of baking spice, mostly cloves; flickers of smoke and maybe tobacco. Slides smoothly toward dry through the finish.
Just about medium-bodied, chewy and smooth and well-carbonated. Some threads of syrupy stickiness, but mostly clean. Gradually drying and tending toward refreshing. Some gentle boozy warmth, very subdued.
A tasty beer, subtly spiked with chocolate but otherwise something a lot like and old ale or a barleywine. Complex as heck, maybe a little subdued for 8% ABV; nicely balanced, poised, and graceful. Wonderfully drinkable. A beer that makes me want to celebrate all the holidays, however they're spelled.
