Adroit Theory God Is an American

Tonight's beer:

Adroit Theory God Is an American

Opens almost blisteringly bitter—mostly fruity: citrus (grapefruit, lime, orange) with layered melons and tropical fruits; pine, grass, flowers, musk densely braided in. Pale-bready sweetness struggles to the surface around the middle, with flecks of honey and caramel. Slams dryward into the finish, bitter again.

A little thicker and heavier than medium-bodied, with a decent amount of loose carbonation. Large swathes of resinous stickiness, eventually drying and scrubbing, cleansing an tilting toward refreshing. Lingering pulpiness. Virtually no alcohol presence.

I'd happened upon some of these folks' big stouts, but visiting their brewery made it pretty clear they have more range than that (though making big stouts as good as theirs would probably be good enough for some folks ...). This beer hammers that home. It's an appropriately wild ride for the style, but it holds together well and is poised and graceful and seems entirely intentional. Searingly intense and dazzlingly complex. Terrifyingly drinkable, with no warning of the 8.5% ABV. Just, wow.
