Tonight's beer:
Starts off pretty fruity—figs and dates, plums and maybe cherries, some bright grapes that vector the beer slightly toward tannic. Bread, toast, caramel fill in behind. Vague hints of earthy-peaty bitterness. Maybe a trace of dark spirits (mostly brandy). Slides slowly and easily toward dry.
Maybe a hair thicker than medium-bodied, carbonation on the almost-sparse side of adequate. Some tannic-boozy prickle, pretty subdued for 9.6% ABV. A lingering trace of chewiness and eventual stickiness; finally drying and lean and cleansing and refreshing.
A very tasty old ale, with one kinda odd ingredient for the style—there's grape must in there, per the bottle—tilting it a little toward oddball. Intense as hell and amazingly complex, balanced and well-integrated; shockingly drinkable. Adroit Theory are close enough and good enough that gosh darn it I have no excuse not to go back.
