Alewerks Bitter Valentine

Tonight's beer:

Alewerks Bitter Valentine

Starts out with a tsunami of bitterness: mainly citrus (grapefruit and lime, grace notes of orange) with a heavy dollopy presence of pine and flowers; musk and grass woven in. Pale bready sweetness in the background, maybe a touch of honey. Snaps to dry at the finish on the shoulders of resurgent bitterness.

Medium-bodied with decent carbonation, scrubbing and almost scouring, cleansing and quickly scouring. Lingering resinous-syrupy stickiness. The 8.3% ABV is awfully difficult to find. Pretty smooth, overall.

This beer has in the past seemed to me to be kinda hard to find, what with Alewerks having a smallish distribution footprint, and with this beer having a pretty narrow release window, and all-a-that. I've happened to be in Williamsburg when this stuff was released a couple times, and that's a good thing. The beer is intense as hell and remarkably complex, nothing like balance but poised and graceful and wonderfully well-integrated. Deliriously drinkable, practically slurpable. A beer I'm going to pick up if I see it, especially in February.
