Tonight's beer:
Very sweet at the beginning: caramel and toast, nuts and toffee. Vanilla, baking spice (mostly cloves and allspice), rum and brandy around the edges. Earthy-grassy-peaty bitterness struggles to emerge as the beer feints in the direction of dry.
Thick, dense, softly chewy; a good amount of carbonation eventually proves to be at least somewhat scrubbing. Some thin lingering stickiness, then finally kinda dry. Wraps up pretty clean, with basically no hint of the 7.9% ABV.
A superb doppelbock, pretty much spot-on for the style. Intense as heck and impressively complex, a bit of a malt-bomb but poised and graceful and supple and massively drinkable. Gloriously well-integrated. Clearly these folks know their way around a big lager, despite the "ale" in their name. Gotta love a good doppelbock, an this is a very good one. Yum.
